Choosing an auspicious wedding date can sometimes be a nerve-wrecking process, especially if you are Chinese and are highly superstitious. The superstitious Chinese believe that auspicious dates are not a “one size fits all” solution as there are a lot of other variable factors such as the couples’ time and date of birth which may actually render a good date bad for that couple! Some who consult fortune tellers are sometimes told that they have only one day in that year to get married on or they can’t get married till 2 years later!
So how can you choose your wedding date if you are a modern Chinese who doesn’t quite believe in consulting a fortune teller yet wouldn’t want to tempt the Fates? Find out how here.
Flip the Chinese calendar and take a look underneath the Gregorian dates. Below the Gregorian date is the date and date in Chinese. Under that is a feng shui and astrology section that lists if that particular day is an auspicious or inauspicious one.

A day can be auspicious for something but inauspicious for another so if you are selecting a wedding date, do look out for those dates which clearly spell it is auspicious for a wedding or joyous event. If nothing is mentioned, it means that the date is neutral. As a rule of thumb, Chinese generally avoid the 7th month or Hungry Ghost Month as it is deemed to be an inauspicious month. Nevertheless, some couples have had their auspicious dates recommended in the 7th month and have very happy marriages!
So, ultimately, whether you are marrying on an auspicious day or not, it is what you make of your marriage that will make it work. Nevertheless, this is an interesting Chinese tradition and custom and if it was Fate that decreed you and your future partner will meet, Fate too might have a little hand to play in your joyous future together!
