Choosing a wedding photographer can be one of the hardest part of your wedding planning and wedding budgeting. It should be one of the first things you start researching, together with your hotel reception venue and the engagement of your wedding photographer should not be left to the last minute as famous photographers such as Jenny Sun, Louis Pang, John Ishii and Jim Liaw often get booked up very quickly, sometimes even up to 2 years in advance! However, with so many wedding photographers out there, how does a stressed bridal couple choose?
Here are some top questions you should ask your wedding photographer to choose the photographer who can work with you to bring out the best on your wedding day.
Experience in Wedding Photography
- How did you start your career as a wedding photographer?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- What gives you an edge over other wedding photographers?
- How long have you been taking wedding photographs, full time or part time?
More questions to interview your wedding photographer are listed below.
Wedding Photography Style
- How would you define your wedding photography style – relaxed, formal, photojournalistic, creative, traditional?
- What are your favourite angles and shots?
- How do you interact with your clients to get the best shots on their wedding day?
- What are the “cannot miss” shots in every wedding you shoot?
- Have you ever missed important shots?
- Will you be providing touched up shots for each photo so we may do our own prints?
- On average, how many photos do you shoot in one wedding?
Get to Know Your Wedding Photographer
- What sort of food arrangements will you prefer during the wedding event?
- Can we shoot some casual potrait style photography on the actual day?
- How flexible are you to changes in the schedule or capturing little surprises that happen during the wedding?
What is most important during your interview with your photographer is to gauge how you and your partner feel about them and how comfortable you are with them. That will play a big role in your interaction with the photographer on your wedding day and how your photos will turn out!
Ultimately, remember that they too are trained professionals and deserve to be treated as such! So treat them with respect and friendliness and they will reciprocate in kind

Since when did John Ishii became a wedding photographer? He was a press photographer a long time ago, and then he went into commercial photography.
Hi Jaime – Yes John Ishii has always been a photojournalist and press photographer. However, I understand that he has recently tried his hand at different styles of pre-wedding photographs and has produced some amazing shots!
