Wedding Traditions – Giving of Wedding Favours

by Elle on February 19, 2009

A wedding today seems incomplete without wedding favours. However, have you ever thought how this tradition of giving little favours to wedding guests was started?

The tradition of wedding favors actually dates back all the way to the days of the European Aristocracy. Wedding favours then were given out to guests in the form of Bomboniere which usually comprised a pretty jeweled or porcelain trinket box. The trinket boxes were usually filled with sweets or sugar as sugar was expensive and affordable only by the wealthy and royalty. The sweetness of the sugar also possibly signified the sweet union of the bride and groom and wishes for a sweet life ahead together.

Wedding favours evolved over time and some of the most traditional wedding favours are five sugared almonds. They represented good wishes for the bridal couple’s life together and symbolised Health, Happiness, Wealth, Fertility and Long Life.

The giving of wedding favours to your guests is a great way to personally thank them for attending your wedding. It adds a splash of colours to your reception tables and usually bring smiles to your guests, especially children. The well wishes and blessings wedding favors bring, together with the range of unique and beautiful wedding favours available today makes it a wonderful touch to your wedding reception.

As a Chinese, I’m surrounded by Chinese. I only know that when they get married, they have to buy those coconuts and etc to put at their bed. That’s why I never learn about western wedding.
