Should You Wear A Corset Under Your Wedding Gown?

Every bride wishes to look radiant and beautiful on their wedding day. This includes having a wedding gown that flatters and enhances your figure. Most brides do not have perfect figures and despite going on diets and hitting the gym before the wedding, some brides still may have some issues with how their bodies look in their wedding gowns. Some advocate the use of corsets to smoothen out unwanted lumps and bumps and to achieve a streamlined figure.

A corset may be especially important in a Malay wedding where the bride often has to fit into a very slim-fitting wedding kebaya for her akad nikah and wedding ceremony. So should you consider wearing a corset under your wedding gown or wedding kebaya?

Types of Bridal Corsets

There are several types of bridal corsets you can consider wearing. Some corsets contain underwire to achieve a more structured form while others may be made of seamless and non-wired material to comfort. If you have a fitting sheath bridal gown or wedding kebaya consider using a seamless corset or lingerie undergarment to avoid unsightly bumps caused by the underwire and structure of the bridal lingerie. As much as possible, get a corset or bridal lingerie in your skin colour especially if your wedding gown is sheer.

Consider getting a one-piece lingerie or corset that starts from the chest down to the thighs to achieve a slim and streamlined look under your gown. A slimming undergarment that starts from the waist may create an additional and obvious bump in your silhouette. Read on below to learn if you should wear a bridal corset.

Bridal lingerie that is tight and fitting provides a good foundation under your wedding gown as they push the various parts of your body into the correct places to achieve a beautiful slim and hourglass figure. However, be careful as all the excess weight that gets pushed around will need to go somewhere and this can create ugly lumps if the corset is not worn properly or ends around the hips or thighs. A common problem some brides face with low back wedding gowns is a back cleavage caused by a tight corset around the chest and waist. You will not want a tiny hourglass waist but wide hips as a result of the corset! Hence, it is important to invest in a good corset and ensure you wear it properly.

Bridal Lingerie May Be Uncomfortable

If you choose to wear a corset or one-piece slimming lingerie under your gown, do be prepared for the discomfort that can come with it. These corsets create an additional layer of material underneath an already hot and heavy wedding gown which can be very uncomfortable, especially in our tropical weather, as the day wears on. Although most wedding venues now are airconditioned, it can still be hot or itchy if the material is not smooth against the skin. Many brides have also complained of how tight corsets make it difficult for them to breathe or eat. A fainting bride from lack of oxygen or food does not make for a pretty wedding picture!

Should you wish to invest in one, do go for something which is comfortable and fits properly. Break in your corset prior to your wedding day to ensure you are comfortable with the fit. Do ensure that your bridesmaid or dress assistant knows how to help you into your corset or lingerie and that they do not lace you up too tightly. Consider the cost of the corset too as good quality corsets do not come cheap.

Note that most tube wedding dresses today come with whalebone to create an in-built corset. Hence, it may not be necessary to wear another corset underneath that. The discomfort you face with a corset is also something to keep in mind as a wedding is often a full day event and you would want to be as comfortable as you can to continue looking beautiful and radiant till the end of it. Instead of a corset, consider looking for a wedding gown design that flatters your body shape so you may enjoy your wedding as much as your wedding guests do!
