Have you always wondered which side of a groom a bride should stand on and why?
Often, the bride just stands on her groom’s left during the ceremony however, did you know that traditionally, the bride is to be on her groom’s right after the ceremony is over?
Read on below to learn more about this interesting wedding tradition!
Where Should A Bride Stand During The Wedding Ceremony
In ancient times, marriages were not usually the happy occasions they are today. Brides were often kidnapped from their homes by the grooms in the olden style of “marriage by capture”! Hence, as most men’s right hand was their fighting arm, they had to ensure it was free to draw their sword at any point during the marriage ceremony to fend off irate members of the bride’s family or any other suitors she might have who will try to steal her away at the last minute! So the bride being on her groom’s left actually kept her safe from any accidents!
Aren’t you glad marriages today are much more sedate?!
Where Should A Bride Stand After The Ceremony

However, this changes after the officiant has performed the ceremony as the groom will now escort his new wife down the aisle during the recession on his right! This actually dates back to the times when horses and carriages were still used on the streets and a woman was often protected from splashing dirty water by her husband who walked between her and the carriage. The newly married bride remains on her husband’s right for all other parts of the wedding after that.
An easy way to remember this is to think “Whitey Righty” where the whitey (bride) is always on the righty!
So, if you are wondering which side you should stand on during your wedding ceremony, just remember some of these traditions to make your wedding that little bit more meaningful!

Great advice however your “after the ceremony” picture shows the bride on the LEFT of the groom which contradicts your advice for “whitey righty”. Good pic, but I was confused for a sec
