Planning your dream wedding is exciting and fun but remember that your wedding will not be legally recognised without a proper civil registration. A civil registration or Registration of Marriage (ROM) is mandatory in countries all around the world. If you have not done your civil registration and are wondering how it should be done in Malaysia, read below for a comprehensive guide to registering your marriage in Malaysia. The marriage registration tips below are applicable only to non-Muslims are Muslims are bound by different Muslim laws.

Marriage Application Procedures at JPN For Malaysians

  • Both the bridegroom to-be and the bride-to-be must present in person (witnesses need not come).
  • One copy of the completed JPN.KC02 Application Form (link)
  • Original and photocopy (on A4 paper) identity cards.
  • Original and photocopy (on A4 paper) birth certificates.
  • Three passport-size coloured photographs each (32mm X 38mm).
  • A photocopy (on A4 paper) of the identity cards of your two witnesses who must be Malaysian Citizens above 21 years old. If either bride or groom is below 21 years old, his or her father must be one of the witness. If his or her father already passed away, his or her mother can become a witness. But his or her father’s original death certificate must be produced.
  • During submission of application, the couple can choose the date of registration of marriage themselves, but it must be at least 21 days from the date of submission up to a maximum of 6 months ahead.

If either party is a divorcee, these additional documents are required:

  • Letter confirming marital status after divorce (original)
  • Decree nisi for absolute divorce (original & photocopy)

Cost Of Registering Your Marriage In Malaysia

A fee of RM30 must be paid during application if the submission is made to JPN. However, higher costs may be incurred if the marriage registration is conducted in a private ceremony with a private registrar of marriage.

On the agreed date of registration, both the couple and the two witnesses must be present with the following:

  • The couple’s original identity cards.
  • The couple’s original birth certificates.
  • The witnesses’ original identity cards.
  • Other documents: Original Father’s death certificate or divorce certificate.

Useful Marriage Registration Tips

  • Note that registration of marriages in JPN Putrajaya are allowed only if the couple both hold identity cards with KL or PJ addresses. However, you may still register in JPN Putrajaya with an out of state address by first applying for a change of address.
  • The 21-day minimum period may be accelerated by applying for an exemption license from the Chief Minister Of The State and a fee of RM100 will be imposed.
  • If you are planning your registration on a very auspicious date, do submit your application forms as early as possible to secure your date.
  • You may want to drop by JPN to check both your marital status before submitting the application form. There have been previous cases where non-married individuals are listed as married.
  • Attire worn on the registration day has to be formal. No sleeveless tops, shorts, slippers, jeans or singlets are allowed.
