Most couples today choose to get married on Saturdays and Sundays for the convenience of the weekend. However, it is interesting to note that marrying on a Saturday used to be forbidden in pagan times for Westerners!

Just like how the Chinese have auspicious days for weddings and certain days or months that should be avoided, the Westerners have actually a similar tradition which dates back to Pagan times! Read on for some fun on what days and months traditionally were auspicious and inauspicious to get married in.

Recommended Days To Marry

An ancient rhyme recommended marriage only in the first half of the week and definitely not on Sunday to observe the Sabbath.

Monday for wealth
Tuesday for health
Wednesday the best day of all
Thursday for losses
Friday for crosses
Saturday for no luck at all

How ominous sounding!

Auspicious Months For Marriage

Married when the year is new, he’ll be loving, kind and true.
When February birds do mate, You wed nor dread your fate.
If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you’ll know.
Marry in April when you can, Joy for Maiden and for Man.
Marry in the month of May, and you’ll surely rue the day.
Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you’ll go.
Those who in July do wed, must labour for their daily bred.
Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see
Marry in September’s shrine, your living will be rich and fine.
If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry.
If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember.
When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last.

What an interesting tradition! Although, I’m sure modern brides today will be glad that these traditions no longer play a big part in their wedding planning. Otherwise, imagine the hassle of booking a wedding venue and booking your wedding guests for a weekday wedding!
