Bridal Bouquet Guide

Bridal bouquets started off with an interesting history where a combination of flowers and herbs were first used in ancient times to ward off evil and to symbolise fertility! This tradition has now evolved into beautiful blooms that every bride carries down the aisle with her as a symbol of her beauty and freshness, just like the flowers she carries.

The fickle or creative bride will be happy to know that there is now a mind-boggling range of wedding bouquet styles for her to choose from, depending on her wedding ceremony, venue or reception settings. Peek below for your guide to wedding bouquets!

Posy Flower Bouquet

The posy is a popular choice of bouquets as it is small, cute and can be easily held in one hand. In making a posy, the flower stems are tied together by wire or ribbons to make a light flower bouquet. Beautiful satin ribbons around the stems with pearls or beading are used to finish off the look for an elegant posy. This small and closely arranged bouquet looks great with wedding gowns of any style.

Nosegay Bouquet

The nosegay is similar to the posy but contains leaves and greenery, unlike the posy which consists solely of flowers. It is usually slightly smaller than a posy and usually carried by the bridesmaids or flower girls. Traditionally the nosegay bouquet was mounted in a tussy-mussy holder (European small metal cone-shaped holder) but this has now evolved into pretty satin and organza ribbon decorations.

Beidermeier Bouquet

The beidermeier is an European inspired floral bouquet that is rather unique and pretty. It features flowers of similar types and colours arranged in rings with each ring having different types and flower colours. If you have a coloured wedding theme, carrying a prettily arranged beidermeier bouquet in your wedding theme colours will add the finishing touch to a stylish and beautiful wedding.

Crescent Bouquet

The crescent bouquet is a larger and more elaborate floral bouquet. It can be either symmetrical or assymmetrical and features flowers or greenery cascading down either sides to create a crescent shape. Due to its larger size, the crescent bouquet looks better with wedding gowns with fuller skirts. Petite brides who are considering crescent bouquets should get a smaller bouquet made to avoid being overwhelmed by flowers. Carry crescent bouquets just below your waist for a stunning look.

Arm Bouquet

The arm bouquet is also called the pageant bouquet or presentation bouquet. It usually comprises several long-stemmed flowers such as calla lilies, roses or orchids loosely tied with a pretty ribbon. Carried in one arm, it is an elegant and natural bouquet which looks beautiful with sheath or slim wedding gowns. However due to its size and carrying style the arm bouquet may be less popular with brides who wish to keep their arms free during their wedding.

Arm Bouquet

There are lots of wonderful options out there for wedding bouquets today and most florists will be able to do you your dream bridal bouquet with sufficient advance notice. During your wedding research, print or cut out pictures of bridal bouquets you like and discuss them with your wedding florist to create a bridal bouquet that suits your personality, wedding gown style and wedding theme.
