Malaysians Marrying Foreigners

I recently received many questions from Malaysians who wanted more details on procedures of marrying a foreigner in Malaysia. Bridging cultural divides in a mixed marriage can be difficult enough so here is a quick and easy guide of the documentation you require and procedures you will need to go through to register your marriage to a foreigner in Malaysia.

Westerners Marrying Malaysians

Documents Required For Malaysians Marrying Foreigners

Documents for the Malaysian Partner

  • Original Malaysian IC (bring on registration day)
  • Photocopy of your Malaysian IC
  • Passport sized photo (blue background)

Documents for the Foreign Partner

  • Original passport
  • Photocopy of front page with details and page where entry into Malaysia has been endorsed (foreign partner needs to be in Malaysia 7 days before registration)
  • Single status letter from the embassy or country of origin (including official translation if not in English). This needs to be endorsed by the Malaysian Embassy of that country or Wisma Putra in Malaysia
  • Signed copy by Notary Public confirming single status (optional but may be useful)
  • Passport sized photo (blue background)

Additional Documents Needed If Marrying A Divorcee or Widow/Widower

  • For divorcees, copy of the Decree Nisi Absolute confirming the divorce.
  • For widows or widowers, a copy of the deceased spouse’s death certificate.

The above additional documents for divorcees and widows/widowers are necessary for both Malaysians and foreigners.

Hope this helps and makes your registration process a little less painful so you can concentrate on the beautiful fairy tale wedding you have been planning! :)

With Love,
Elle

Hi Elle,

This site has become my guide to planning my wedding in KL in 2011! Just wondered, do you know anything about the documentation that us Brits are required to have with us when we get married in Malaysia? I have been told that I can go to the Malaysian Embassy in London and serve notice before this happens? Is this the case?

Thanks,
Keira x

Hi Elle,
I will be marrying my china wife soon and bringing her over to Malaysia. I understand that her single status letter needs to be endorsed but if I choose to do it in Wisma Putra will she have problem entering Malaysia? Appreciate the help, many thanks in advance.

Hi Elle,

We are planning to get registered and marry in Malaysia.

She will gets single status letter from Embassy Malaysia in China.
Then we will go to Wisma Putra KL to get endorsement on the single status letter.
Single status declaration from Notary Public (need clarify on this?). If needed, where can I can the notory public service?
After she stay in Malaysia for 7 days.
Then, submit the Document to JPN (Kuantan, Pahang) because my IC # registered at kuantan. Can i do it at JPN Kuala Lumpur.
Since I only come back for 2 weeks vacation, is there possible to expertise the process at the JPN kuantan?

Your help are appreciated.

Hi KK – Please contact the JPN in Kuantan directly. Express registration is usually possible but you will need to liaise with JPN. You can contact any registered Notary Public for the declaration.

Hi Keira – Yes it should work but best to confirm with JPN first!
